While the Will Abell Memorial Trail isn’t an overly difficult hiking route, there are a number of intersecting paths that can make navigation a bit tricky. Featuring a great balance between elevation gain, overall length, and beautifully scenic views, the Will Abell Memorial Trail is a great route if you are looking for a fun day on the trails in San Bernardino National Forest. The peaceful atmosphere of the evergreen forests and a gorgeous lookout over Lake Arrowhead await on this fun family-friendly adventure.
Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the southeast and begin climbing uphill through the beautifully atmospheric woodland landscape. After gaining some elevation along the trail, you will arrive at the viewpoint overlooking Lake Arrowhead, where you will enjoy sweeping views across the lake, forest, and surrounding mountain landscape.
After taking in the views, you will turn to the north and briefly climb uphill, before making a descent through a series of switchbacks in the forest. Here, the trail will eventually turn to the west and bring you further downhill into the picnic area, where you will quickly arrive back at the trailhead where you started your time on the Will Abell Memorial Trail.

Lake Arrowhead
Situated along Little Bear Creek in the San Bernardino Mountains, Lake Arrowhead is a man-made reservoir that was originally constructed to provide irrigation water to the nearby San Bernardino Valley. After several disputes, construction of the 780 acre lake was eventually completed in 1922, and it now serves as a recreational body of water for the residents of the Lake Arrowhead community.
