    Directions to Trailhead

    Tucked up into a corner of Tucson's Saguaro National Park West, the Vertical Cliffs to Abington Loop is an easy, lightly trafficked route with rugged desert scenery. This hike is great for all skill levels and it can be extended using connecting trails if you wish. Try this one out on a day when you want a good shot of having the trail to yourself. Bring a route map if you’re unfamiliar with this part of the park.

    Route Description for Vertical Cliffs to Abington Loop

    The Vertical Cliffs to Abington Loop is a quiet trail in the far northeastern corner of Saguaro National Park West. This trail makes you feel like you’ve got the desert to yourself if you’re lucky, with tall saguaro and low mountains nearby to see. You can easily extend this route using the connecting trails if you’d prefer a longer or more challenging adventure.

    Bring lots of water on this hike and consider a downloaded GPS route or a map if you’re unfamiliar with this part of the park, especially if you want to wander a bit. Try to avoid hiking in the heat of the day unless you’re making a winter visit.

    From the trailhead, go right into Vertical Cliffs Trail. Continue straight through the first junction and keep left at the next. Near the Wuma Mine Wash, go sharply left to pick up Abington Trail. You’ll be hiking along the wash for a bit before turning away and taking a left up Veteran’s Trail. Go right onto Animal Wash Trail, which will lead you back to the trailhead.
