Beautiful buildings on trekking tour in Northern Greece

Day 1: Arrive in the foothills of Mount Olympus

Welcome to beautiful northern Greece! Your journey begins in the foothills of Mount Olympus, in Litochoro Village. You can get to Litochoro from Thessaloniki, which takes about 2 hours by car, or from Athens, which is a 6-hour drive.

Day 2: Start of hike up Mount Olympus

You will start your trek up Mount Olympus today! Begin with a transfer to Prionia (1,100 m / 3,609 ft), which is as far as you can go by car. Hike from here you’ll walk to the Spilios Agapitos shelter (2,100 m / 6,890 ft) along the most popular hiking trail on Mount Olympus. The trail is well-maintained and leads through the lush forest, thick with beech, fir, and pine trees. From the Spilios Agapitos shelter, follow the path higher as it zigzags up to an alpine plateau where the Refuge Christos Kakkalos (2,700 m / 8,858 ft) will offer you warm, comfortable shelter for the night.

Day 3: Summit Mount Olympus

You’ll get an early start today for your summit bid on Mount Olympus! Depending on the weather and the abilities of the group, there are two options for today’s hike.

The first option is to climb to the summit of Skala (2,882 m / 9,455 ft), then hike across a narrow ridge before climbing again to the summit of Skolio (2,911 m / 9,550 ft).

Weather permitting, you can choose to climb to the summit of Mytikas (2,917 m / 9,570 ft), the highest peak in Greece. This route follows a narrow gorge and requires rock scrambling for about 1 km, and 4-5 hours of hiking on narrow trails to gain approximately 800 m of altitude.

From the summit, descend and cross the spectacular precipice below Peak Stefani, which is known as the Throne of Zeus. The path then leads to the stunning Plateau of Mouses. From there you will hike about 2 hours to reach the Petrostrougka Refuge (1,940 m / 6,365 ft) where you can rest and eat lunch. After another 2-3 hours of walking, you will reach Gkortsia, and from there transfer back to Litochoro.

Day 4: Relax on explore the beach

After two hard days, you’ll love today.  Enjoy a peaceful day of relaxation and swimming at Platamonas beach, a very pretty beach.  You’ll also visit Dion, an archaeological site with an ancient sanctuary of Zeus. Transfer to Meteora for the night.

Day 5: Ancient Monasteries hike

Today you’ll explore the ancient paths used by monks to explore cliff top monasteries around Meteora. Begin your walk from the St. Nicolas monastery in the village of Kastraki. The trail winds through tall towers of rock and past the ruins of the Pantocrator monastery near the striking Dupiani rock. The path then leads through a lush forest to arrive at Ypapanti, a monastery that was abandoned and later restored, and also to the ruins of St. Dimitrios. Beyond this, the trail ascends a short distance up to visit the clifftop monasteries of Varlaam and Great Meteoro.

Return to Kastraki along the traditional path the monks used, passing the cave of St. George Madila along the way. For generations, local people have carried on a tradition of hanging scarves here on the feast day of St. George. The views along this hike are spectacular and your professional guide will teach you about the geology and historical significance of this area.

Day 6: Explore Metsovo

Travel today from Meteora to Aristi, stopping along the way in the village of Metsovo. Metsovo is a pretty mountain town surrounded by high mountains.  This quaint, picturesque village that is full of historic importance and has not lost any of its traditional character.

Day 7: Hike around villages of Koukouli and Vitsa

Take a lovely hike today to the villages of Koukouli and Vitsa. Visit the Plakidas Bridge, a unique and impressive triple-arch structure that is more than 200 years old. The path from here to Koukouli is well-maintained and takes about 45 minutes to walk. Visit the home of Lazarides, which is now a museum dedicated to this teacher who collected and documented the local plant life. The museum also gives insight into village life long ago. From Koukouli, continue walking to Vitsa via the Misios Bridge and the 300-year-old stone path known as the Vitsa steps.

Stop to rest in Vitsa and visit the Kanela and Garyfallo Restaurant to learn more about wild mushrooms. Foraged food has always been an important part of the local diet, which is predominantly vegetarian. Vassilis Katsoupas, owner and chef at Kanela and Garyfallo, is an expert on wild mushrooms. He weaves family stories, local lore, and science into a unique experience that is a blend of storytelling and dining, and which teaches about all the important roles that fungi have played  throughout human history. The presentation concludes with a 5-course meal which features wild Zagori mushrooms.

Day 8: Explore Vikos Gorge

Today’s fascinating trek will show you why the Vikos Gorge is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful gorges. The trek begins in Monodendri village, and after a 45-minute walk you will enter the gorge itself. It will take about 4 hours to get to the Springs of Voidomatis, then from there another hour of walking will bring you to the village of Vikos.

Altogether your hike through the gorge, along the Voidomatis River, will take approximately 5-7 hours. The Vikos Gorge is 20 km long and its depth ranges from 450 m to an astounding 1,600 m. At its widest point, it is about 400 m wide, but at some points it is only a few meters wide. It is listed as the deepest gorge in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, as well as other sources, based on the definition of a gorge in contrast to a canyon. Of the 20 km that the gorge extends, 12 km are protected by the Vikos-Aoos National Park. The landscape is striking, characterized by steep slopes and precipitous cliffs, and the views today are sure to be fantastic.
