Route Description for Aspen Mountain Trail

The Aspen Mountain Trail is an epic adventure for those who don’t shy away from a challenge. Although it is a taxing feat, this trek reveals awe-inspiring scenery and sweeping vistas from the summit of both Aspen Mountain and Bell Mountain. Lacking many switchbacks to lessen the intensity of the climb, the terrain up to the peaks is vertigo-inducing. Ensure you are acclimatized to the elevation prior to your hike in order to mitigate the chances of altitude sickness. Additionally, the exposed terrain at the peak warrants extreme conditions, so we suggest leaving before dawn to summit before noon—layers are also always a good idea too! Note that the route is shared with mountain bikers and the occasional off-road vehicle, so be mindful of passers-by.

The beauty of Aspen Mountain is that it can be enjoyed year-round in a multitude of ways, by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. Ski or snowboard down the snow-packed slopes in the winter months, and in the summer, enjoy the verdant woodlands, lush meadows, and epic views as you hike, bike, or drive up to the peaks. On an ideal summer day, you may even spot the odd paraglider! This trek also has an added bonus: the option of taking the gondola back down the mountain—saving the stress on your joints if you hiked! No matter how you get to the summit, or how you make your way back down, we know you will appreciate the Aspen Mountain Trail just as much as we do.

Embark on your adventure along the Aspen Mountain Trail from the “trailhead” off Aspen Mountain Road. From here, hook on to the Aspen Mountain Summer Road which you will follow for the entirety of your climb! From here you will be guided southwest through the meadowlands, and over Pioneer Gulch, where you will be granted an expansive view of the ski slopes of Aspen Mountain. Follow the path through a small area of towering pines before the trail guides you west, returning you to a lush meadow.

Weaving again through a small forest and again crossing over Pioneer Gulch, the Aspen Mountain Summer Road will guide explorers past several historic mine sites that used to dot the hillside in the late 1800s. Navigating a few more switchbacks through the now primarily exposed terrain, you will find Ruthie's Restaurant before reaching the summit of Aspen Mountain. From the peak, revel in the scenery of the ski resort below and the many chairlifts that run parallel to the slopes. Notice the active city of Aspen in the south, and Loge Peak in the southwest. Take a rest here, rehydrate and when you are ready, continue along the route.

Passing several more old mine sites and intersecting with Spar Gulch, you will eventually meet your adventure’s culmination at the summit of Bell Mountain. Here, you will notice The Sundeck Restaurant and the Silver Queen Gondola Lift. Appreciate the grandeur of the feat you just accomplished and admire the stunning alpine scenery. With dramatic peaks of the Elk Mountains lining the horizon for as far as the eye can see, the sight is truly mesmerizing. After you are done ogling over the scenery, begin your descent or take the gondola down the mountain. If you are heading down by foot, simply retrace your steps along the path all the way back down to the trailhead.

Aspen Mountain is a summit in the Elk Mountains that is commonly referred to by its former name, Ajax Mountain. Conveniently located above the city of Aspen, this peak sits at an elevation of 3,263 m.
