Antarctica Trips

Guided Antarctica expedition cruises, from the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia to icebergs, penguins and whales.

Antarctica is the last truly wild continent, reached by expedition ship across the Southern Ocean. Trips here are about wildlife and ice: shore landings at penguin colonies, Zodiac cruises among the towering icebergs of the Antarctic Peninsula, and the chance of humpback and minke whales and leopard and fur seals along the way. Some voyages go further, to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, for huge king penguin rookeries and the history of Shackleton’s expeditions.

Planning your trip to Antarctica in 2026

When to go to Antarctica

Antarctica has a short season, from late October to March, the austral summer, when the ice opens up enough for ships to reach the peninsula. Early on, in November and December, the ice and snow are at their cleanest and the penguins are courting and nesting. January and February are the warmest months, with long daylight and the first penguin chicks on the colonies. By February and March the focus turns to whales, as humpbacks and minkes feed in the channels, part of why Antarctica ranks among the world’s great wildlife tours.

How Antarctica trips work

These are expedition cruises, not ordinary ones. Most sail from Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina and the usual gateway to Antarctica, crossing the Drake Passage to the peninsula over about two days each way. That far-south corner of the continent is also part of 10Adventures’ South America tours. Once south, the ship becomes a base: small Zodiac boats run daily landings and cruises among the ice, led by expert guides and naturalists, with lectures back on board. The trips sit at the expedition end of 10Adventures’ wider cruise tours.

Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands

The routes suit different travellers. The Antarctic Peninsula voyage leans into activity, with kayaking among the icebergs, snowshoeing ashore and even snorkelling for the hardy, which ties it to 10Adventures’ water tours. The longer odyssey trades some of that for wildlife and distance: South Georgia, the ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean’, with its vast king penguin and seal colonies and Shackleton’s grave at Grytviken, plus the Falkland Islands on the way south.

FAQ for Antarctica Tours

When is the best time to visit Antarctica?

The season runs from late October to March. November and December bring the cleanest ice and nesting penguins, January and February the warmest weather and penguin chicks, and February and March the best whale watching.

How do you get to Antarctica?

Most trips sail from Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina, crossing the Drake Passage by ship over about two days each way. Voyages that also take in South Georgia and the Falklands cover more of the Southern Ocean and run longer.

Do I need to be very fit?

No. These are ship-based trips rated moderate. You need to manage stairs and step into a Zodiac for landings, but the walking ashore is optional and usually gentle. Kayaking and snowshoeing are extra options for those who want them.

What wildlife will I see?

Penguins are all but guaranteed: gentoo, chinstrap and Adélie on the peninsula, and huge king penguin colonies on South Georgia. Expect seals (leopard, fur and elephant) and, especially later in the season, humpback and minke whales.

How cold is it?

The peninsula in summer is milder than most people expect, often between about -2 and 8°C, though wind and water make it feel colder. Layered, waterproof clothing is essential; many ships lend or include a parka and boots.

Are meals and gear included?

Expedition cruises are generally all-inclusive once on board: cabin, meals, landings and guided excursions. Specialist activities such as kayaking or camping are usually paid add-ons booked in advance.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes. Operators require comprehensive insurance that includes emergency evacuation, given how remote Antarctica is. It is worth arranging as soon as you book.

Should I choose the Peninsula trip or the South Georgia voyage?

The peninsula trip is shorter and more active, with kayaking and snowshoeing. The South Georgia and Falklands odyssey is longer and richer in wildlife and history, including king penguin colonies and Shackleton’s grave.

Will I get seasick crossing the Drake Passage?

It is possible, as the Drake can be rough, but modern expedition ships have stabilisers and most travellers manage well with medication. The crossing is usually two days each way, and the scenery and wildlife beyond make up for it.

How far ahead should I book?

Antarctic ships carry limited berths and the best cabins and departure dates sell out months in advance, often close to a year for peak departures, so it is worth booking early.
