Route Description for Buckhorn Loop Trail
The Mount Buckhorn Loop Trail is an amazing day hike, and we can’t recommend it enough. Conveniently located near the city, this trek is a great weekend or after-work escape from the busyness of the city! Shared with mountain bikers and open year-round, this versatile trek attracts all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts! Note that sections of this trail are more primitive than others, so don’t be surprised if you have to do some bushwhacking and navigating over fallen trees! Though not necessary, a trail GPS can come in handy! Note the endmost section of the route travels along a car traffic road, so keep to the shoulder!
Embark on your adventure along the Mount Buckhorn Loop from the Gold Camp Trailhead. From here, head west along the Gold Camp Road, passing through a metal gate. At this intersection, take a sharp right onto the Mount Buckhorn Trail. Hike the forest-lined path northeast to another junction. At this point, keep right onto the Captain Jack’s Trail along the slopes of Mount Buckhorn and Mays Peak. As you wander this path east, you will be granted sights of the Red Rock Canyon Park and Garden of the Gods below.
At the route’s end, track along the shoulder of the Gold Camp Road, heading west. Follow this road back to your trailhead, marking the end of your adventure!
