Route Description for Stormy Peaks Hike

The Stormy Peaks Hike is a challenging excursion into the Rocky Mountain National Park. This excursion is not for the faint of heart. Scramble up the rearmost section of the trail up to the Stormy Peaks. This incredibly scenic trail delivers unforgettable views of the Mummy Range and the verdant subalpine woodlands below. This trail ascends extreme altitudes—ensure to dress appropriately as the weather at the summit will be much colder. Wear layers and consider bringing microspikes to help navigate the likely snowy peaks. If you are not acclimated to the elevation, make sure to take your time and do not push your limits. Pack plenty of water and take breaks as you ascend the steep terrain.

Begin your journey from the Stormy Peaks Trailhead. Hike southwest along the forested path, past the Twin Lakes Reservoir. Continue up the route and stay right at the first junction. Ascend the terrain through the lodgepole pines. Continue trekking the path and it will become increasingly exposed as you ascend the steep grade. Soon the terrain will evolve into an alpine tundra as you cross the boundary into the Rocky Mountain National Park. Follow the path as it curves hikers south along the rocky ridge and past the dispersed campsites. Hike the mountain saddle, and you will eventually find yourself amongst the striking Stormy Peaks.

From atop the Stormy Peaks, you will be rewarded with dumbfounding views of the Mummy Range and Pingree Park. Bask in the grandeur of the snow-capped peaks that flank the lush woodlands below. Revel in the vistas and recharge before commencing your descent. When you are ready, retrace your steps back to the trailhead and car park.
