Route Description for Round Top, Winnemucca, and Fourth of July Lake Loop
Put your stamina to the test along the Round Top, Winnemucca, and Fourth of July Lake Loop. This wonderful high-country adventure offers epic views to motivate even the most discouraged hikers to persist. As this path weaves between tree shade and exposed terrain at such a high altitude, it is important to check the forecast prior to your trek to mitigate the chances of getting caught in an afternoon storm. Additionally, we suggest dressing in layers and packing plenty of water! Note that this route takes many turns and trails, so we recommend using the trail GPS. There is a parking fee; refer to the Eldorado National Forest Website for additional information.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Round Top, Winnemucca, and Fourth of July Lake Loop follows the Winnemucca Trail before diverging right onto the Round Top Lake Trail. Follow this path southwardly all the way to the Lost Cabin Mine and onto Round Top Lake. Admire the beauty of the blue-hued waters, then track the Camp Irene Trail southwest down several switchbacks to the Fourth of July Lake. At this point, you will want to retrace your steps along the Camp Irene Trail back to Round Top Lake. Here, you will connect with the Round Top Summit Trail, which will guide you up the vertiginous, rocky terrain to the summit of Round Top Mountain. Revel in the expansive alpine views from here, then head back down to the intersection at Round Top Lake.
Back at the junction for the third time, this time, you are going to head east along the Camp Irene Trail over to Winnemucca Lake. Dip your toes in the chilly waters, then follow the Winnemucca Trail back to the trailhead.
