Route Description for Lathkill Dale Walk
Lathkill Dale Walk | Peak District
The Lathkill Dale walk is a scenic route through one of the most beautiful limestone valleys in the Peak District. Although the Lathkill Dale route only features a small amount of elevation gain, there are a few steep sections to note, particularly the stone steps that can become slippery after rainfall. Combined with open stretches of farmland, this makes good walking footwear essential for exploring Lathkill Dale safely.
Route Guide to Lathkill Dale
Setting out from the car park, make your way across the road and follow the trail as it cuts across the farmland to the west. After a brief walk through Low Moor Wood, you will pass by Low Moor Farm on your left and cross a few more fields before making your descent along the steep stone steps into the forest. Keep right here to continue through the woodlands of the Lathkill Dale Nature Reserve before arriving at the banks of the River Lathkill.
Make your way over the footbridge that spans the river and head east, following the River Lathkill as it winds through the dramatic limestone valley. The towering cliffs and clear waters are defining features of Lathkill Dale, and this riverside stretch is one of the highlights of the walk.
After passing a small waterfall, you will make your way through Palmerston Wood and eventually arrive at the ruins of Bateman’s House, the former residence of Thomas Bateman, an antiquarian connected with the area’s mining history. Continuing east along the Lathkill Dale trail, you will pass several old mine workings before arriving at Lathkill Lodge.
Follow the path back across the river to climb uphill and cut across open farmland, eventually returning to the car park where you began your Lathkill Dale walk.
