Walking to Shining Tor via Cat and Fiddle Road is a short adventure up the moor that will take you to the trig point at the summit of Shining Tor. From this elevated perch along the border of two counties, you will have a spectacular view of the surrounding moor, farms, woodlands, and small villages that dot the landscape of both East Cheshire and Derbyshire. For those looking for a longer adventure, head further along the trail to descend the moor and access the network of routes near the Errwood Reservoir.
Route Description for Shining Tor via Cat and Fiddle Road
Although it is only a short 4.0 km walking route, the track to Shining Tor via Cat and Fiddle Road does climb uphill along the moor, so be sure to wear decent footwear. Additionally, this is a fairly busy destination for walkers. If you want to secure the limited parking that is available in the layby at the trailhead, make sure to arrive early.
Setting out from the layby, follow the track north and keep right at the fork as you begin the gentle climb up the hillside. After passing Stake Farm on your left, you will arrive at a gate. Pass through and continue on for 0.2 km, heading left at the junction to pass through another gate. Here, the trail will steepen a bit as you make the ascent of to the summit of Shining Tor.
Head left at the junction and cross over the stile along the stone wall to arrive at a vantage point with sweeping views overlooking East Cheshire. After taking in the sights, head back downhill along the same trail to return to the layby where you began your quick walk.

Getting to the Shining Tor via Cat and Fiddle Road Trailhead
To reach the trailhead for the Shining Tor via Cat and Fiddle Road from Buxton, head southwest on St. John’s Road/A53 for 2.4 km and turn right onto Macclesfield Main Road/A54. After 2.7 km, keep right to continue onto the A537, following it for 2.7 km to arrive at the trailhead on the right.
