Route Description for Perl Charles Memorial Trail

The Perl Charles Memorial Trail is named for one of the chairs of the ASHA desert preservation committee. This area was developed with his help to be a vibrant region for hikers, bikers, and equestrians to enjoy. This trail creates a loop that reaches towards Piestewa Peak. You’ll have a great view of the peak and the rolling desert hills all around you. There are a few steep climbs on this loop and the trail ascends and descends multiple times through the course of the hike. Some parts of the trail are busier and some get you away from the crowds.

There is very little shade available on this hike, so we recommend bringing lots of water with you and planning your hike for a cooler morning. If you bring dogs, remember to bring water for them and keep them leashed while you hike. Some users report relying on dog boots in sections with sharp rocks. Make sure you begin from the trailhead indicated on the map and not the Dreamy Draw Trailhead, which is closed for renovations.

This loop can be hiked either way. Our route goes clockwise. Cross the road and follow Trail 1A north along the road into the preserve. At the fork, continue straight and follow the trail as it winds its way around the base of the hills. You’ll turn towards Piestewa Peak and hike along its northern base, returning to the fork and turning back downhill towards the trailhead.
