Route Description for Pyramid Trail
Pyramid Trail is a route in the southwestern portion of South Mountain Preserve in Phoenix. This out and back hike climbs up a ridge and traverses along its top. The views of the mountains and the city are wonderful, and if you can complete the initial climb, you’ll enjoy a relaxed rest of the hike. This adventure can also be extended slightly to reach the National Trail Lookout.
As with all hikes in this area, make sure you bring lots of water with you and turn back when your water is halfway done. Consider wearing sun protection. Poles will be helpful for the climb up to the ridge.
From the trailhead, take Pyramid Trail to the fork, then stay right to remain on it. You’ll get a bit of a flat warm-up before you hit the base of the ridge. This is where the climbing begins; make your way up to the top of the ridge on switchbacks. The footing may be rocky here. Once atop the ridge, enjoy a more cruisy trail. The outbound journey ends at the T-junction, where you’ll turn back and retrace your steps to the trailhead.
