Trail 306 and Trail 100 lead you through the Phoenix Mountain Preserve near North Mountain. Expect light to moderate traffic and enjoy the desert views.

Route Description for Trail 306 via Trail 100

Trail 306 via Trail 100 might not be the most exciting sounding hike by the name, but don’t judge a book by its cover. This hike leads you through the North Mountain area of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. You’ll hike through a valley between Shaw Butte and North Mountain and make a short ascent partway up Shaw Butte. The hike up the butte is rocky and steep, but if you were to skip this part, you’d still have good views but on a more family-friendly route.

Make sure you bring plenty of water with you for this hike. Poles could be helpful if you have them, and good boots will help with the climb.

From the trailhead, take #100 Trail to #306 Trail. Head out into the valley and enjoy the views. Stay right to head halfway up Shaw Butte through a set of switchbacks. The trail ends partway up the butte, where you’ll turn around and retrace your steps.
