Route Description for Mill Lake Trail
Immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery of Colorado’s high country along the Mill Lake Trail. This amazing adventure has remained a hidden gem amongst the hiking community, but we fear it won’t remain unknown for much longer. Short, sweet, and steep, this trek has the perfect ratio of strenuity and scenery. Get your heart rate up and let the epic alpine views motivate you to persist up to the glittering alpine lake.
Begin your trek along the Mill Lake Hike from the Fossil Ridge Trailhead. From here, the Fossil Ridge Trail will guide adventurers northwest along the curves of Lamphier Creek. Soon you will encounter an intersection and veer right to be diverted onto the Mill Lake Trail. Enjoy the views of towering pines that line the rocky path and revel in the sights of the looming summits peeking through the breaks in the tree cover. After navigating a set of vertiginous switchbacks, you will be guided above the treeline through a vibrant alpine tundra. Eventually, you will confront the lake which will undoubtedly leave you at a loss for words.
Admire the postcard-worthy view of the shimmering lake bounded by the impressive cliffs of Fossil Mountain. Dip your tired feet in the chilly waters and appreciate the panorama beginning your return. When you are ready, backtrack along the path to the trailhead.
