The Coed Nant Gwernol walk is a quick and easy circular route that offers convenient village and railway access. The Nant Gwernol River is the central focus, with verdant woods and tumbling waterfalls to enjoy. Remnants of old quarries and railways make for interesting points of exploration.

Route Description for Coed Nant Gwernol

Head south across the main road, with the Railway Inn behind you on your right and a row of houses on your left. The well-signed path leads down the Nant Gwernol River. You can walk in either direction, but this route starts by taking the lane where it splits to the left before following the river south. Across the river is the Nant Gwernol railway station, where you can also start the walk if you’re travelling by rail.

The path is well made and easy to follow. It ascends rather quickly after that initial fork, then descends the rest of the way smoothly. You’ll come to a set of waterfalls and a sign for “The Station.” Turn right here, then right again to follow the river back up north to the village. If you want to extend the walk, the initial path continues on a wide loop through some old quarry sites.

Getting to the Coed Nant Gwernol Trailhead

The Coed Nant Gwernol walk starts in the village of Abergynolwyn. The car park in the village centre is easy enough to spot, just off the main road (B4405). The Railway Inn is a good place to ask for tips if needed.
