Table of contents

This out-and-back walk up Yr Aran from Rhyd Ddu offers a fantastic adventure with the convenience of easy access and shorter time requirements than many of Snowdonia’s famous peaks. A path from the car park leads you up through open grassland, and your main ascent includes a stone wall for guidance. Panoramic views of Snowdon and the Rhinogydd mountains greet your arrival at the summit, and returning is as easy as retracing your steps.

Route Description for Yr Aran from Rhyd Ddu

A broad path leads from the car park across the railroad tracks. You’ll see a gate that reads “Footpath to Snowdon.” Avoid this and stick right along the main path. As you approach the Bwlch Cwm Llan pass, you have the option of walking left up a slate path or along the lake to your right. Both lead to the same spot—in wet conditions, the lake path may be quite boggy.

Reaching the Bwlch, find a stone wall and follow this to the right as your ascent becomes steeper. Take care over the loose rocks and smooth surfaces. Eventually, the wall will veer significantly to the left, and here you should follow the path on the right, which leads you on a straightforward push to the summit of Yr Aran.

The views here are magnificent. To the north is Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales; to the south, the wild Rhinogydds. Once you’ve soaked in the vistas to your heart’s content, turn back and retrace your steps down the mountain back to the Rhyd Ddu car park.
