Route Description for East Mountain Trail
The East Mountain Trail is a beautiful hike that shows off the mountains south of Globe. This route is easy to follow considering its remote nature and light traffic. You can hike this route as an out and back as described or continue off the south side of the mountain to make a loop instead, which is convenient if you plan to stay at Pioneer Pass Campground.
While this route is shady, bring lots of water for your hike. Users report seeing bear scat on this trail, so consider hiking in a group or carrying bear spray.
From the trailhead, the route follows the creek north for a short distance before beginning to climb the base of the mountain. After a warm-up climb, you’ll tackle a set of steep switchbacks to crest the ridge. From here, the hard climbing is over, and you’ll simply follow the ridgeline to the summit of the mountain to soak up the views. Where the route ends, turn back and retrace your steps to the trailhead.
