The Desperado Loop is an excellent hike for those days when you just want to cruise along a simple, easy route with pretty views. This loop is surprisingly scenic and fit for all ages and skill levels. It’s favored by families, older hikers, and beginner mountain bikers, but anyone can give it a go. Dogs are allowed on this trail as long as they’re kept on a leash.

There are a few interconnecting trails on this loop that you can use if you want a longer adventure. Download a GPS map ahead of time if you want to be able to roam without getting lost. As with all trails in Tucson, bring water with you and avoid hiking in the hot afternoon.

From the trailhead, hike south to the fork and stay left. Around one left-hand curve, the trail splits. Stay left to keep strolling around the loop, admiring the saguaros and seeing if you can spot any lizards or rabbits. You’ll traverse to the far eastern edge of the preserve before beginning your loop back. Stay right at the junctions on the return trip and you’ll find yourself back at the trailhead.
