Route Description for Hugh Norris, Sendero Esperanza, and Dobbie Wash Loop
The Hugh Norris, Sendero Esperanza, and Dobbie Wash Loop is a bit of a hidden gem. This Saguaro Wilderness route isn’t usually too busy, but the views are awesome and varied. There’s a bit of a workout in the first half of the hike, but then you can hit cruise and fly through the easier second half back to the trailhead. This route is suitable for active, older kids and strong beginners.
The second half of the loop can get hard to follow in some spots, so users report relying on downloaded GPS tracks to help them find their way. Bring lots of water and prepare to have very little shade on this hike.
We prefer this loop counterclockwise. This gives you the best scenery and most challenging terrain at the beginning of the hike, allowing you to make up some time on the easier and less visually interesting return trip. From the trailhead, take the route that approaches the ridge. You’ll climb the ridge to a saddle, then traverse along the ridge line to a 4-way junction. Take a left here, descending the ridge and hiking much flatter, easier terrain past Apache Peak and to the road. Follow the road to the trailhead.
