Wild Dog Trail Route Guide

Share your favourite pictures from this trail
It’s probably impossible to pick a bad trail in the Saguaro Wilderness, but the Wild Dog Trail is a great choice for a few reasons. This 1.9mi can be finished in less than an hour for most groups, but it doesn’t skimp on the views. See the tall saguaros, the foothills, perhaps the local javelinas, and be back to the car in time to go about your day. This route is easy enough for all skill levels and sees light traffic.

Route Description for Wild Dog Trail

We’d venture to say almost all of the trails in Tucson’s Saguaro Wilderness are worth a shot, and Wild Dog Trail is a great one to pick on days where you need a short hike but still want the views. This 3.1 km route makes quick work of the desert trail, but you’ll be able to enjoy the tall saguaros, the mountains in the distance, the local wildlife, and a bit of solitude before the end of the hike.

Navigation on this trail is quite easy. You’ll want to bring water with you even though this is a short route, and plan to have no shade as you hike. A hat is a good idea.

From the trailhead, the route heads south past the foothills. Look for Apache Peak on your left about halfway through. Keep an eye out for javelina and rabbits, and snap some photos of the biggest saguaros you see. The trail goes straight through an intersection with another route before terminating at the road. From here, turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
