Route Description for Zion Grotto Trail

The Zion Grotto Trail is an easy, family-friendly walk between Zion Lodge and The Grotto. Though this hike does not feature any major viewpoints, it is a lovely stroll through the desert and is a good place to see wildlife as mule deer are often grazing along the trail. To walk the Grotto Trail, hop off the shuttle at the Zion Lodge (5th stop). The Zion Grotto trail starts at the lodge and heads north. The trail itself is well-trafficked, well defined, and mostly level, making it a great option for kids, elderly folks, or those just looking for a relaxing stroll. Follow the trail for half a mile, and you will reach the Grotto picnic area. This lovely spot features barbeques, restrooms, and water fountains and is a great spot to enjoy lunch before heading back. If you’re in a total food coma after your picnic and don’t feel up for the walk back to the lodge - no worries, the Canyon shuttle can pick you up here at the Grotto. However, if you are feeling energized, there are more trails to explore; branching off from the Grotto, you can hike up the West Rim Trail to the northeast or down the Kayenta Trail to the southwest, just be sure to make it back to a pick-up spot before the last shuttle.
