Itinerary for 4-Day Daisetsuzan National Park Hike
Arrive at Airport and Transfer to Sounkyo
Welcome to Hokkaido! On arrival at the Asahikawa Airport today, you’ll meet your driver and local English speaking hiking guide to transfer to Sounkyo where the adventure begins.
Here, you’ll get your first introduction to the Daisetsuzan National Park. Tonight, you will stay at an onsen hotel in this incredible gorge setting. Once you’ve checked in, pay a visit to the Daisetsuzan Garden, and top it off with a stop at the Kita Taisetsu sake brewing company!
Trek Mt. Kurodake and Continue to Nukabira
Following a delicious breakfast this morning, you’ll begin the day with a thrilling trek up Mt. Kurodake to get warmed up. Known as a top location for on-piste and back-country skiing in the winter, Mt. Kurodake is a great mountain with stunning views of the surrounding area. Depending on your hiking ability, it is an adjustable hike as well (ride the summer lifts midway up, or start at the bottom and tackle the whole thing). When you finish you will travel via the incredible Mikuni Pass (don't forget to try to spot the chipmunks at the peak of the pass!) to Nukabira, famous for its disappearing bridge.
Tonight, you’ll unwind at a unique local onsen-hotel that serves incredible healthy food, locally sourced and lovingly prepared. Following a delectable meal, you can relax in the outdoor baths here before a good night’s rest.
Hakuunzan Hike to Minami-Furano
This morning you’ll wave goodbye to beautiful Nukabira as you set out for a hike at Hakuunzan, overlooking Lake Shikaribetsu. This location is one of the few locations in Hokkaido where you can see the pika that live in this mountainous area (they are super cute!). Today’s hike will be spectacular, and at the top you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Shikaribetsu.
On conclusion of today’s hike, you’ll head for Minami-Furano to spend your final overnight. Stay lakeside at a cabin or cozy local hotel.
Last Moments in Daisetsuzan National Park
Today you’ll want to soak up your final moments in the beautiful Daisetsuzan National Park. Set out with your local guide to explore the surrounding forests, or perhaps lend a hand to a local farmer as you learn about the melon harvest in the area.
Once you’ve said your goodbyes, it’s time to head to the Asahikawa Airport, or you can extend the trip for one more night to include the Asahidake hike.
