10-Day Camino de Santiago in Luxury
It was an exhiliarating and awesome experience that exceeded all my expectations!
You’ve made it to Bolivia! After being warmly received at the airport, you’ll be taken to your hotel. Toss your bags down and head out towards Moon Valley, a unique clay labyrinth that’s nature’s artwork, filled with stalagmites. Then, head back into the city for dinner.
Begin the day by setting off for the historic centre of La Paz after breakfast. The red cable car in the sky is your ride for the day. After you fly around the city, stop in at different local markets for some souvenirs or snacks. Highlights include the countless varieties of potato dishes and the fresh fish markets, which are carefully prepared each morning as early as 3:30 am. Take a breather for a delicious local lunch at Manq’s. Then, you’ll spend the afternoon walking through the city, including the colonial district, the main square, and the many great art galleries along Jaen Street.
After breakfast, you’ll head to the airport for the next portion of your Bolivia Adventure Tour. You’ll arrive in Sucre, where a local guide will work with you to individualize the itinerary based on your preferences. Sucre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the intricately designed churches, buildings, and squares are beautiful. Take a walking tour, stop in at once of the local museums, or visit the convent of the Recoleta.
After breakfast, set off for the village of Chataquila, where you’ll set off on an ancient Incan trail. When you get to Chaunaca, take some time to appreciate how incredible the views are. Then, it’s off by vehicle to Rio Chaunaca, where you’ll picnic and relax. Afterwards, set off for Maragua, a village in the Frailes Cordillera, which is a unique geological feature that looks like a meteorite crater. The Devil’s Throat waterfall is nearby, which is much more enjoyable than the name might suggest. Spend the afternoon walking in the crater before a transfer back to Sucre.
After breakfast, spend the morning enjoying any sights in Sucre you didn’t get a chance to enjoy prior, or maybe just a bit of shopping for interesting souvenirs. A vehicle will take you to Potosi, a lovely colonial town where you can settle in for lunch and an afternoon walk.
The next part of your Andean adventure takes you to Casa de la Moneda, the biggest colonial building constructed by the Spaniards in the Americas. Pack a camera! Then, you’ll head off in a private transfer to Uyuni for the evening.
Today’s trip starts in the Lipez region. There’s a fascinating train cemetery on the way, which you’re welcome to stop in at. Likewise, the church in San Cristobal is a worthwhile pit stop- it was painstakingly rebuilt brick by brick after being relocated due to mining. Take another break at the amazing Valley of Rocks, which is full of otherworldly rock formations several metres high. Finally, take a photo op at a panoramic canyon lookout before settling into Villamar in the late afternoon.
Start the day at the hot springs near Polques. They’re nature’s hot tubs, so take a swim and admire the Chalviri Lagoon in the distance. When you’re back on the road, you’ll approach the border with Chile where the “Dali Desert” awaits. Get ready for a landscape, unlike anything you’ve seen before! Ochre-coloured ground and isolated rocks make it feel like a drive on Mars. Finally, you’ll arrive at the Green Lagoon, which is deep emerald in colour and sits right at the base of the Licancabur volcano. Keep heading towards the Red Lagoon, which is full of pink flamingoes. You’ll be spending the night out here in the refuge, so you’ve got plenty of time to admire the birds and to explore the nearby Siloli Desert, which is full of unique rock formations.
Today, you’ll start with a trip to the “1001 Lagunes” road, a series of unique lakes full of flamingoes. The lakes reflect the colours of the nearby mountains, which makes for a beautiful sight. You’ll take a break by the Oliague and Tomasamil volcanoes, and then continue to visit the site of some pre-Inca mummies. Spooky! Then, it’s off to San Juan for dinner.
Get day 11 started with a trip to the Salar of Uyuni, where massive salt flats lie. This is a truly incredible place, with a perfectly smooth, snow-white surface. Take lots of photos! Then, head to the island of Incahuasi, which is home to rare cacti. Finally, you’ll pay a visit to a tiny salt farm in the village of Tahua. Enjoy the sunset over the salt flats while you eat dinner.
Begin the day with breakfast before heading to the nearby village of Coquesa, which is right next to the Tunupa volcano. There are pre-Columbian mummies from 700 BC hiding around, and you might even stumble across one! Then, hike up to an overlook with an amazing view of the volcano and the nearby salt flats. You’ll head back down and jump in the car to head back to the Uyuni airport, as you’re heading back to La Paz for the night.
Transfer to Uyuni airport for the flight to La Paz, operating on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays (with a stopover). Upon arrival in La Paz, transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for relaxation or exploration at your leisure.
The journey begins early from La Paz, heading toward the Yampaturi area. After a two-hour drive, the route reaches the small village of Palcoma, continuing east into a picturesque valley leading to Laguna Kasiri. This tranquil area, rich in potato farming, chuño preparation, and llama and sheep herding, offers a glimpse into local life, with stone houses nestled in the valley. The vehicle is left behind as the trail progresses north-east along a road suitable for vehicles. The valley splits, with a rocky hill in the center inviting exploration. Passing two small lagoons, the path steepens through a rocky section, leading to the stunning Kasiri Lagoon at 4690 meters (15,387 feet), overlooked by its namesake glacier. Weather permitting, a climb to a small glacial lagoon at 4900 meters (16,076 feet) can be attempted. Returning to the vehicle, the journey continues to Palcoma village, then north to the Yampaturi waterfalls, passing three artificial lakes before turning south toward the Serki Kollo massif. The day concludes at a campsite near Doña Angelica's home, where she tends over 100 llamas and sheep with her team. Visitors may enjoy tea in her cozy countryside home and assist in herding llamas back to their enclosure for the evening.
From the camp, the route ascends the hillside toward Cerro Japajapani, gradually gaining elevation. The glacier comes into view, with Huayna Potosí to the northwest and Serki Kollo to the northeast. The path follows the ridge to the summit, where an open crater shelters a small green lagoon. The final stretch is steeper, with sandy terrain making the ascent more challenging, but the summit at 5312 meters offers a stunning, otherworldly landscape and breathtaking views of Illimani and Mururata mountains. The descent leads back to the tranquil camp. After farewells with Angelica, Don Francisco, and Doña Cristina, the journey continues back to La Paz and modern life.
Enjoy a final breakfast to cap off your Andean adventure, and then you’ll be transferred to the airport to head back home.
