Overview

The Self-Guided West Highland Way Highlights Walk showcases the most dramatic, mountainous stretches of Scotland’s best-loved long-distance trail. Beginning in Bridge of Orchy, it follows the wilder northern half of the route—where sweeping moorland, historic passes, and iconic Highland landscapes set the tone for an unforgettable journey.

From Bridge of Orchy, the trail strikes out across the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor, one of Britain’s last great wild places. Here, you’ll follow old military roads through heather-clad terrain beneath immense skies, with wide-open horizons in every direction. The route then continues beneath the unmistakable pyramid of Buachaille Etive Mòr, the sentinel peak that marks the entrance to Glencoe—famed for its towering geology and haunting history.

From Kingshouse, the Way climbs steadily to its highest point on the Devil’s Staircase, rewarding you with far-reaching views before descending to Kinlochleven at sea level, with Loch Leven shimmering below and mountains rising all around. The final stage delivers a true Highland finale: climbing beneath the Mamore Hills, crossing the remote Lairigmòr Pass, and descending through Glen Nevis to Fort William—resting in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain.

Though shorter in duration, this itinerary captures the full spirit of the West Highland Way: rugged walking, classic Highland scenery, and a powerful sense of progression through wild country. With daily distances designed for confident walkers, it offers an immersive and deeply rewarding experience—plus the option to extend your stay in Fort William to explore Glen Nevis or tackle the legendary ascent of Ben Nevis.
