Utrecht to Bruges Bike Tour

Arrive in Utrecht, a historic canal city in the heart of the Netherlands. Its low-traffic centre is built around the iconic Dom Tower and is best explored on foot, with charming cafés, monuments and World Heritage sites scattered throughout. Art lovers can visit the Museum Catharijneconvent, while fans of modern Dutch design may recognize Utrecht as the birthplace of Dick Bruna and architect Gerrit Rietveld. A boat cruise along the Old Canal offers a unique perspective on the city’s historic wharves.

Set off from Utrecht through a landscape of stately homes, castles, woodland and parkland as you follow well-maintained cycling paths toward Oudewater. This charming historic town welcomes you with monumental buildings, stepped gables and a picturesque marketplace lined with period houses. Depending on your chosen distance, you may also continue toward Gouda, renowned for its historic character and traditional Dutch atmosphere.

Today’s ride takes you through Gouda and the Green Heart of Holland toward the iconic windmills of Kinderdijk, where 19 historic mills have stood since 1740, once regulating water levels in the surrounding polders. Continuing onward, you reach Papendrecht, just across the river from Dordrecht—one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands—where elegant bridges and harbourfront monuments reflect its long trading history.

Cycle past the freshwater tidal landscapes of Biesbosch National Park before crossing a long bridge over the Hollands Diep into the southern Netherlands. The route leads through welcoming Brabant villages en route to Bergen op Zoom, an 800-year-old town of narrow streets, historic squares and notable monuments, including the late-Gothic Markiezenhof.

Ride through predominantly wooded landscapes toward the Dutch–Belgian border, passing through the cross-border nature reserve of De Zoom–Kalmthoutse Heide. Following the Scheldt quays, you cycle directly into the historic heart of Antwerp, Belgium’s largest port city, where grand architecture, lively districts and centuries of maritime heritage await.

Following the Scheldt River southward, today’s longer stage traces established long-distance cycle routes through open polders and riverside landscapes. Passing through Dendermonde, you continue toward Ghent, a vibrant cultural city known for its striking architecture and lively atmosphere.

Cycle through the peaceful landscapes of the Meetjesland region, passing the Vallei van de Oude Kale nature area and the castles of Maria-Aalter and Bulskamp. Following canals and green parklands, the route leads you into Bruges, where cobbled streets and historic architecture create the atmosphere of a living open-air museum.

After breakfast, your cycling journey comes to an end in Bruges, marking the conclusion of your ride from the Netherlands into Belgium.
