Route Description for Bear Peak Western Approach

The Bear Peak Western Approach Hike is an epic summit adventure in the Boulder Open Space. A perfect introductory or conditioning trek to Colorado Front Range excursions. Though pups are permitted along this path, it is not recommended, as the terrain near the summit is very steep and rocky. As you are walking deep into the wilderness, it is important to be mindful of wildlife, such as mountain lions and black bears! Some hikers choose to wear bear bells to deter unwelcome encounters. If you are venturing this path in the winter months, be sure to strap on some microspikes.

Departing from the trailhead, the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail will travel southeast through meadowlands. Eventually, you will encounter an intersection. Here, veer right and you will be diverted onto the Green Bear Trail. Now trekking south through the meadowlands, you will eventually cross the Bear Creek before beginning your ascent. Begin your climb up to the summit of Bear Peak, ascending the summit western flank. As you near the peak, the terrain will become increasingly steep and rocky and will require scrambling up to the summit.

When you finally ascend the summit the views, or the steep climb, will take your breath away. Revel in the vistas of the Front Range snow-capped peaks that line the horizon in the west and sights of the Boulder cityscape in the east. Enjoy the scenery, and when you are ready, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
