    Directions to Trailhead

    The Loch an Eilein, Loch Gamhna, Old Logging Way Loop is a wonderful walking trail in Cairngorms National Park that features a variety of terrain and interesting historical sites. While out on the trail, you will enjoy scenic views of Loch Eilein and its 14th Century island castle, before passing through the boggy terrain surrounding Loch Gamhna and the woodland landscape to the northeast. This is a wonderful route if you enjoy historical, wildlife, or nature views.

    Route Description for Loch an Eilein, Loch Gamhna, Old Logging Way Loop

    If you are searching for a laidback adventure in Cairngorms National Park that features a bit of everything to appease every member of your walking party, then the Loch an Eilein, Loch Gamhna, Old Logging Way Loop will be a great option. This fun trail features beautiful forests, plenty of wildlife, and a fascinating castle, ensuring that there is always something to look at throughout the walk.

    Setting out from the car park, you will make your way to the southwest along the shores of Loch an Eilein, where you will enjoy some beautiful views across the water. Here, you will find the ruins of a castle that is situated on an island in the middle of the loch that dates back to the 14th Century.

    After taking in the views of the loch, you will continue on to the southwest to traverse the boggy landscape surrounding the smaller Loch Gamhna, before heading to the northeast through a vast stretch of forest. Take some time here to relax in the natural setting of the forest, while keeping an eye out for the various wildlife species that call the area home. Eventually, you will pass by the Rothiemurchus Camp and Caravan Site, where the trail will turn back to the southwest. Here, you will once again work your way through serene forests and open meadows, before arriving back at the car park where you began.
