Route Description for Mount Buckhorn Peak Trail
The Mount Buckhorn Peak Trail is an awesome adventure just outside the city. Short and sweet, this trek is a great lunchtime escape or weekend excursion into the fresh air. Conveniently located and impressively scenic, this trek is a popular experience, so expect to share the trail with like-minded adventurers. Furthermore, shared with mountain bikers, it is important to be mindful of passers-by! When hiking in the winter months, strap on a pair of microspikes or snowshoes.
Embark on your adventure along the Mount Buckhorn Peak Trail from the High Drive trailhead off Gold Camp Road. From here, head northeast along the High Drive Trail through the woodlands. Immediately departing from the trailhead, you will begin your climb! Soon the path will curve north, leading trekkers to an intersection. Here, keep left, and you will be diverted onto the Captain Jacks Trail. This route will head south before dramatically curving north.
From here, with the help of the trail GPS, you will be guided up a more primitive, unmarked path to the summit of Mount Buckhorn. At the peak, you will be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic vistas of the Front Range foothills, the forested canyons, and the cityscape in the east. Enjoy the views, and when you are ready, retrace your steps along the route back to the trailhead.
