Route Description for Elk Falls Loop Trail

Hiking the Elk Falls Loop Trail is a great outdoor experience in the Campbell River area, however, there are a few things to consider before setting out on your trek. Elk Falls Provincial Park boasts a decent network of hiking trails that allow you to explore the area, as well as other activities like fishing. Because of its popularity, it is best to arrive early to secure parking and enjoy the views of the falls without crowds of people. Additionally, this is an easy family-friendly trail, but there are a few steep sections that could be challenging for less mobile hikers. You can hop onto the trail from different points to bypass some of these sections.

The Elk Falls Loop Trail is a popular hiking destination, and for good reason. The route will take you through breathtaking stretches of old-growth forest with large cedar and Douglas fir trees, some of which are hundreds of years old. As you approach the sound of rushing water, you will have an amazing view looking down onto the Elk Falls that plunge 25 m down into the vibrant green, moss-covered canyon below. This is a fantastic hiking route for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts, even if it is a bit short.

Setting out from the parking area, follow the trail to the northwest through the forest for 50 m before arriving at a junction. Take the path to the left to briefly turn to the south before following the trail north as it meets up with the edge of the Campbell River. Enjoy the breathtaking forest filled with ancient cedar and Douglas fir trees for 200m, where you will come to a viewpoint overlooking the Deer Falls.

After taking in the sights, continue through the tranquil forest for another 600m to arrive at the scenic viewpoint for the much larger Elk Falls. Here, you will be able to watch the torrent of water as it flows over the edge of the moss-covered rock and plunges into the canyon far below. Although you will have an awesome view of the falls from here, hikers looking to extend their journey can try exploring some of the alternate routes in the area to cross over the nearby suspension bridge for an even better view.

Once you have wrapped up your time at the falls, head back along the trail and turn left at the fork to make the return journey to the parking lot. Head to the right at the next junction and continue on through the dense cover of the forest for another 375 m to arrive back at the parking area having completed the Elk Falls Loop Trail.
