The Stoke Hill Woods Walk is a nice family-friendly route just north of Exeter that features some scenic views of the Devon countryside and a bit of uphill terrain. While out on the trail, you will make your way through the quaint forest to a lookout over the River Exe before climbing up the hillside along a stream. The trail can be fairly muddy after a good rainfall, so don’t forget your wellies in order to keep your feet dry!
Route Description for Stoke Hill Woods Walk
Walking the Stoke Hill Woods Trail is a great excursion in Devon that can be enjoyed by the entire family, thanks to its pleasant terrain, scenic views, and short overall distance. There is a bit of steep terrain near the halfway point of the walk, so keep that in mind if you are travelling with less mobile walkers. Setting out from the car park, you will enter into the thick cover of the forest and head east, traversing the hillside until you arrive at a viewpoint overlooking the River Exe. From here, continue on a bit further and follow the trail as it bends to the south to climb uphill along a stream. There are a number of intersecting trails along this route that can take you back to the car park; however, this particular route turns back and descends the hillside to follow the same path back to the trailhead.
Getting to the Stoke Hill Woods Walk Trailhead
To reach the trailhead for the Stoke Hill Woods Walk from the village of Cowley, drive south on Cowley Hill for 0.6 km and take the first exit at the roundabout onto Stoke Road. Follow this for 1.3 km and turn right to enter the car park.
