    Walking the South West Coast Path: Lulworth Cove to Swanage is a long and physically demanding excursion along the Devon coast, thanks to the overall distance of the trail and the large amount of elevation gain throughout. While exploring the trail, you will make your way along the undulating terrain of the coastal landscape, taking in the stunning views across the English Channel as you make your way between Lulworth Cove and Swanage. While it can be done as a very long single day walk, this adventure is often split up into a multi-day journey.

    Route Description for Lulworth Cove to Swanage

    Traversing a lengthy stretch of rugged terrain towards the end of the South West Coast Path, the Lulworth Cove to Swanage segment of this famous long distance walk will expose you to the challenging landscape and stunning views that can be found along the Dorset Coast. There is a large amount of elevation gain spread throughout this route, so make sure that your physical fitness is up to par and bring any necessary gear/supplies in order to traverse the rugged terrain here.

    Setting out from the beautifully scenic trailhead at Lulworth Cove, you will make your way up the steep hillside to the northeast to skirt around the cove before descending towards the Fossil Forest that offers a great window into the geological history of the region. Walking along the water’s edge, you will traverse the undulating landscape and make your way through a series of climbs and descents that are sure to give your legs a great workout.

    After travelling around St Alban’s Head and taking in the breathtaking views across the English Channel, you will follow the trail to the east along the rugged coast before turning north through the Durlston Country Park to pass by the historic Durlston Castle. From here, it is a relatively short stretch along the shoreline that will bring you to the end point of the walk in Swanage.

    Getting to the Lulworth Cove to Swanage Trailhead

    To get to the South West Coast Path: Lulworth Cove to Swanage trailhead from the Castle Inn in West Lulworth, head southwest on Main Road for 1.0 km and turn right to enter the car park. From there, walk southeast to reach the trailhead at Lulworth Cove.
