The South West Coast Path: Weymouth to Lulworth Cove is a rugged, yet beautifully scenic adventure along the Dorset coast that offers amazing views of the English Channel. Rocky cliffs, charming coves, and windy vistas await on this adventurous portion of the famous South West Coast Path. Be sure to wear proper walking boots and bring a windproof jacket, as the trail is fairly rugged and there are often strong gusts of wind along the exposed trail.
Route Description for Weymouth to Lulworth Cove
Traversing a beautifully scenic, yet rugged and steep, section of trail along the Dorset coast, the South West Coast Path: Weymouth to Lulworth Cove will see you climb uphill for some gorgeous views across the water. There are a number of scenic lookouts and secluded coves along this walk that make it an amazing adventure if you like exploring beautiful coastal landscapes, just be sure to wear good walking boots for the best footing along the trail.
Setting out from the trailhead in Weymouth, you will head to the northeast and make your way through town, passing by the saltmarsh on your left before climbing uphill across the rugged terrain. From here, continue on to the east, passing through Osmington Mills on the way to access the lovely Ringstead Beach.
At this point, you will climb up the steep hillside and enjoy stunning views across the English Channel before descending the rocky landscape to reach the beautifully scenic locations of Bat’s Head, Durdle Door, and Man O’ War Cove. Continue heading east along the trail to once again climb up the hillside on the final leg into the terminus of the trail in Lulworth Cove.
Getting to the Weymouth to Lulworth Cove Trailhead
To reach the South West Coast Path: Weymouth to Lulworth Cove trailhead from the Weymouth Pavilion near the harbour, head west for 56 m and continue straight onto The Esplanade for another 66 m. Follow the road as it bends to the left and continues on for another 0.8 km, where you will arrive at the starting point of the walk in front of the Royal Hotel.
