Route Description for Elkhorn Creek Trail
The Elkhorn Creek Hike is ideal for those seeking a relaxing walk among the technical mountain routes in the area. Easy to follow and perfect for families, this trail is a perfect walk to get you and your family out into nature. This path does travel through an arid Colorado meadow so be mindful of wildlife and rattlesnakes. On a hot summer’s day, ensure to wear sunscreen as the majority of this hike is unshaded.
From the parking lot, the Elkhorn Creek Trail heads westward on a path with mild undulations. Hike through the grassy meadow and enjoy sights of large granite boulders that dot the landscape. Though this trail does not travel along the shore of the Elkhorn Creek, you will get the odd view of the running stream and Disappointment Falls in the north. Continue along the trail as it mildly gains a bit of elevation. As you continue weaving between the odd pine trees, you will get expansive views of the rocky mountains that line the horizon.
The trail will come to its end when you meet a junction. Feel free to continue along the Elkhorn Creek further or simply retrace your steps along the path back to the parking lot.
