Route Description for Urad Lakes Trail
Hike through the mixed fir and aspen forest past not one, but two crystalline lakes. The Urad Lakes Trail is a wonderful day hike through the Colorado Wilderness. This trail is especially scenic in the autumn when the aspens are at their peak vibrance. The Urad Lakes Trail and its surrounding area are popular hunting destinations. Note that the area is subject to seasonal closures during hunting season for safety reasons. The road up to the trailhead is rough, make sure your vehicle has high ground clearance to navigate the rocky terrain. To access this trailhead visitors are required to pay a $10USD entrance fee.
Embark on your adventure around the Urad Lakes Trail from the parking lot and trailhead. Depart from the Upper Urad Lake and trek up the Urad Lakes Trail. Hike along the shores of the Upper Urad Lake and then take the Hassell Lake Trail at the junction. Veer right up the Hassell Lake Trail as it guides you beneath the coverage of fir and aspen trees. Track northwest along the forest land as you gradually ascend towards Hassell Lake. Summit the path up to Hassell Lake and enjoy the marvelous views. Hemmed by steep craggy cliffs, the alpine lake delivers a quintessential Colorado panorama. Hike around the perimeter of the small alpine lake back to the trail.
Dip your toes in the water or try your hand at some fishing, if you have a permit of course, before commencing your return. When you are ready, retrace your steps back to the Urad Lake Reservoir and Trailhead.
