Route Description for Sand Sheet Loop
The Sand Sheet Loop is a short trek at the base of the Great Sand Dunes. Ideal for those planning on ascending the dunes, this quick hike presents the opportunity to learn more about the biologically diverse environment before heading out. This route is entirely exposed, so make sure to wear sun protection on sunny summer afternoons. Note that the Great Sand Dunes National Park charges an entrance fee of $25USD for 1-6 passenger vehicles, giving access to all the hikes and attractions within the park.
Setting out from the Great Sand Dunes Visitors Centre, take the leftmost Great Sand Dunes Interpretive Trail heading southwest. As you wander along the path, be sure to take the time to read the interpretive signs that depict fun facts about the impressive dunes that dominate the landscape. Eventually, the path will reroute you northeast, revealing breathtaking vistas of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Meander along the sandy terrain back to the Visitors Center, marking the end of your short walk. If you want to head into the dunes from here, track the Dunes Access via Visitors Centre Trail.
