    Immerse yourself in the alpine terrain along the Upper and Lower Sand Creek Lake Hike. Hike up to no one, but two shimmering lakes nestled amongst the snow-capped peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Demanding stamina and determination, the scenery from the alpine lakes prove well worth the sweat.

    Route Description for Upper and Lower Sand Creek Lake Hike

    The Upper and Lower Sand Creek Lake Hike is a fantastic expedition in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Hike through dense pine forests interspersed with aspen glades on your hike up to the glittering alpine lakes that reward breathtaking views of the looming peaks. Make sure you are acclimatized to the area’s altitude prior to attempting this trek. Additionally, we suggest heading out at dawn and checking the forecast to avoid getting caught in a nasty afternoon lightning storm. Layers and plenty of water are also a must! Note the road to the trailhead is rough and rugged, so a vehicle which high ground clearance and 4-wheel drive is suggested. The Great Sand Dunes National Park charges an entrance fee which costs $25USD for 1-6 passenger vehicles.

    Embark on your adventure along the Upper and Lower Sand Creek Lake Hike from the Music Pass Trailhead. From here, follow the Music Pass Trail up to the mountain pass before dipping down into the Sand Creek Valley and merging onto the Upper Sand Creek Trail. Hike along the route all the way to Upper Sand Creek Lake, a shimmering body of water nestled in the mountain cirque. Revel in the beautiful scenery, then retrace your footing along the Upper Sand Creek Trail until you reach the Lower Sand Creek Trail intersection.

    Ascend this path to a smaller yet equally stunning alpine lake. Revel in the grandeur of the looming peaks, then head back down the switchbacks, turning right onto the Upper Sand Creek Trail. Wander along this route until you reach the Music Pass Trail. Reconnect with this path, then backtrack all the way to the trailhead.

    The Upper and Lower Sand Creek Lake Hike departs from the Music Pass Trailhead at the end of Music Pass Road (FS119).
