Route Description for West Canfield Butte Hike
This heart-pumping climb rewards its conquerors with spell-binding scenes of the Lake Coeur d’Alene and the surrounding mountainous landscape. Boasting adventure opportunities for all types of explorers, the West Canfield Butte Hike is a popular weekend wilderness escape, so expect to share the trail. However, those seeking a more tranquil experience are encouraged to head out in the early mornings.
Additionally, as much of this route is steep, rocky, and uneven, a sturdy pair of footwear is a must! Setting out from the trailhead off E Mountain Vista Drive, you will be led northeast into the wilderness. Weaving through pine thickets and open meadows, you will be granted views of the city below and the looming forestlands above. While there are many intersecting paths, maintain on Trail 1 for the entirety of your adventure. After some hiking, the route will enter the open tree canopy, rewarding you with a few patches of shade to cool down.
Once you eventually reach the summit of West Canfield Butte, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Coeur d’Alene Mountains and the adorning lakes. Appreciate the beauty of the landscape, then retrace your steps back down the path to the trailhead.
