Route Description for Conrad Kain Hut Trail

The hike up to the Conrad Kain Hut and the Applebee Dome Campground is one of the most scenic trails that can be accessed along the Columbia Valley, and for this reason, it is usually jam-packed during the summer months. If you want a bit of solitude on the trail, try arriving early or at off-peak times to beat the crowds. As with every backcountry hike in BC, make sure to bring bear spray and travel in groups when out on this trail.

The scenery along this trail is stunning; however, it comes with the downside of a grueling uphill climb along a steep incline for much of the route. The views more than make up for the challenge and should offer enough of a distraction to keep your mind off the task at hand. The trail climbs up through the forested valley alongside the creek and uses boardwalks along a few marshy bits. After passing two small moraines and a minor boulder field, the trail transitions to a rugged climb across some rock slabs and stairs to reach the Conrad Kain Hut. From here, follow the trail north for the short but steep hike up to the Applebee Dome Campground, where you will have unparalleled views of the Bugaboo Spire and the Crescent Glacier. After taking in the views, either settle for a night in the mountains or carefully make your descent through the valley to the trailhead.
