Route Description for Crag Lake via Meeks Bay Hike

Explore the best of what the Lake Tahoe area has to offer along the Crag Lake via Meeks Bay Hike. This epic excursion covers a lot of ground, so we suggest heading out in the early morning to leave ample time to explore the alpine lakes before having to head back. We also suggest checking the weather forecast prior to your hike and wearing layers as insurance against changing weather conditions. Additionally, if you are brave enough to venture out in the winter, be sure to wear snowshoes or microspikes. Note: hikers should pick up a free wilderness permit from the trailhead before beginning the trek.

Embark on your excursion along the Crag Lake via Meeks Bay Hike from the Meeks Bay Trailhead. Setting out from here, you will be guided southwest along the Meeks Creek North. Follow this path through the valley and you will eventually reach an intersection. Turn right here onto the Tahoe Yosemite Trail, which will begin to climb more intensely into the alpine terrain. Here, you will wander along Meeks Creek and make your way up to Lake Geneviève.

Explore the shores of the blue-hued lake and continue southeast up to Crag Lake. Admire the scene of the shimmering waters and the bounding granite cliffside of Crag Peak. After reveling in the postcard-worthy scenery, retrace your steps down the footpath back to the trailhead.
