Route Description for Thousand Steps Beach Walk
The Thousand Steps Beach Walk is a pleasant seaside adventure, but it can be a bit dangerous if you fail to pay attention to the tide. Make sure that you look into tide times before exploring the caves and heed the advice of any lifeguards in the area. Additionally, you will want to arrive early to secure parking.
For those who love spending time by the water, this is an excellent little adventure that will definitely not disappoint. Beautiful ocean views, a fascinating cave, and a relatively uncrowded beach all make for a fun seaside excursion that you won’t soon forget.
Setting out from the trailhead at the edge of the Pacific Coast Highway, you will need to first descend the long staircase in order to access the beach. Here, you will be met with beautiful views looking out onto the ocean, as well as toilet facilities that are available for public use.
As this is a beach walk, there isn’t really any trail to speak of, so take your time strolling along the water’s edge to the southeast. Eventually, you will reach the edge of the Thousand Steps Sea Cave and, if the tide is low enough, you can head inside to explore. Hikers should take note that the beach on the opposite end of the cave is private, so make sure not to trespass.
After you’ve finished with your spelunking, simply turn back and traverse the beach once again to arrive back at the bottom of the stairs. If you aren’t yet ready to make the long climb back up the stairs, spread your towel out on the beach and enjoy a few hours of fun in the sun before heading home.
