Route Description for North Fork Matilija Trail
The North Fork Matilija Trail is a wonderful hike that boasts incredible mountain views. Wander along the North Fork Matilija Creek bound by impressive mountains layered with colorful sediment to a mesmerizing cascade and through beautiful woodlands. Be sure to wear SPF and pack plenty of water as much of this route is exposed. Additionally, the terrain along this trail is uneven and rocky—so a sturdy pair of footwear is required! Note that this route also requires stream crossings, so expect to get your feet wet!
Setting out from the parking lot, the North Fork Matilija Hike travels northwestwardly along the Matilija Divide Trail along the road and into the wilderness. Soon after you depart from the trailhead, you will reach an intersection, veer right here, and you will be diverted onto the North Fork Matilija Trail. Now hiking northeast through the canyon, you will eventually pass the Matilija Camp. Continue along the creek through the valley, and you will ultimately reach the Middle Matilija Camp.
Though you can continue further into the wilderness, we turn around here. To get back to the trailhead, simply head back the way you came.
