Route Description for Sunrise Backcountry Camp Loop

If you’re headed to camp in the Sunrise backcountry or just want to enjoy an easy hike with great wildflowers, the Sunrise Backcountry Camp Loop is the trail for you. This short trail is the most direct way to reach the site from Sunrise and a nice trip if you’re in the area for other reasons.

This hike is often done as a loop, but the way back follows a service road that is less scenic than the first half of the hike. If the flowers are out, we recommend hiking this as an out and back instead of a loop for better scenery.

The trail begins from the end of the parking area at Sunrise. Take Sunrise Rim Trail, keeping right before Emmons Vista. The trail turns into Wonderland Trail and crosses two creeks. You’ll skirt Shadow Lake and then take a right to Sunrise Camp. You’ll continue along Wonderland and take a right onto Sunrise Campground Road after the creek crossing. Follow this road back to Sunrise.

Getting to the Sunrise Backcountry Camp Loop Trailhead

The trailhead for the Sunrise Backcountry Camp Loop is located at the western terminus of Sunrise Park Road, at the end of the parking area past the restrooms.
