The Sheep Lake Hike is a long and involved, arduous climb into the Seven Devils Mountain. While taxing, the conquerors of this route will be rewarded with an idyllic pool nestled amongst the granite peaks. Those seeking a shorter adventure—though equally as challenging—should check out the Sheep Lake Shortcut Trail.

Route Description for Sheep Lake Hike

The Sheep Lake Hike offers spell-binding scenery for a sweat. This demanding and dynamic adventure is reserved for experienced hikers who have the proper gear to successfully complete this route as a day-hike, including a sturdy pair of footwear, trail GPS, plenty of water, and trekking poles. Note that while this expedition does not require a scramble, there are steep sections of terrain adorned with loose scree. Additionally, we suggest dressing in layers as insurance against varying conditions at high altitudes. Don’t forget to head out in the early morning to return to the trailhead before nightfall.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will follow the Seven Devils Trail, immediately ascending a collection of switchbacks. Soon after your departure, you will confront an intersection, keep left, and the Seven Devils Trail will venture westwardly beneath the Devil’s Tooth. Follow this same path past the subsequent crossroads until you reach a junction with the Sheep Lake Trail. Hikers will wander past Lilly Pad Lake, Basin Lake, Shelf Lake, Gem Lake, and Rock Island Pond Lake before beginning the final push to Sheep Lake.

After tackling the taxing climb up the rocky scree, you will ultimately reach the shoreline of Sheep Lake. Revel in the beauty and grandeur of the encompassing mountains and the charm of the crystalline waters inviting you for a swim. Enjoy the hidden paradise, then retrace your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
