Benone Strand Walk

The Benone Strand Walk is a wonderful route along the coast that is perfectly suited for walkers of all ages and skill levels. While out exploring the trail, you will walk along the Benone Strand and take in the beautiful views of the beach, while keeping an eye out for local wildlife like seals and porpoises. Route Description for Benone Strand Walk
While the Benone Strand Walk is a fairly easy and laid back journey along the beach, it is also a popular place for more than just walkers. If you want to avoid the throngs of beach goers that will inevitably populate the area around the trail, you will need to arrive early. Additionally, the coast is fairly exposed to the elements, so you may want to bring an extra layer to protect yourself from the wind and rain.
All things considered, this is an exceptional walking route, especially if you enjoy taking in beautifully scenic views along the beach. As you stroll along the sandy beaches, you will have the blue expanse of the ocean on your left and interesting highlights like the Dunne Waterfall on your right and Mussenden Temple dead ahead. This really is a great adventure that can be enjoyed by all.
Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way east along the sandy expanse of the beach and take in the stunning views of the ocean before you. This walk can be as laid back or strenuous as you wish, so if you are hoping for a relaxing walk along the water’s edge, simply slow down and take in the amazing sights. Make sure to keep an eye out for various wildlife species in the area, as countless coastal birds, lounging seals, and swimming porpoises are often spotted in the area.
At roughly one-third of the way through the walk, you will pass by the Dunne Waterfall on your right and marvel at the water cascading down the side of the cliff. Continuing on along the beach, you will have the impressive sight of Mussenden Temple straight ahead on the cliffs high above, which was once the library of the 4th Earl of Bristol. Reaching the terminus of the route at the end of the beach, simply turn back and retrace your steps along the Benone Strand Walk.

Getting to the Benone Strand Walk Trailhead
To reach the trailhead for the Benone Strand Walk from Castlegate, head south on Sea Road for 1.1 km and turn right on Mussenden Road, following it for 6.3 km. Turn right here onto Duncrun Road for 56 m and keep straight onto Benone Avenue for another 0.2 km. Make a left and continue on for 0.6 km to arrive at the trailhead.
