The Kielder Forest Skyscape Walk is a short outdoor excursion in Northumberland that passes through a lovely stretch of woodland terrain to reach a hilltop art installation. While out walking the trail, you will pass through the trees towards Cat Cairn, where internationally renowned artist James Turrell created an art installation that plays with the perception of light and space. This unique walk is perfectly suited for a fun family adventure, or for those looking to blend some artistic flair into their time outdoors.
Route Description for Kielder Forest Skyscape Walk
In addition to being a fairly brief walking adventure, the other downside to the Kielder Forest Skyscape Walk is that it follows along a fairly unexciting road for its duration. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes that are suitable for harder surfaces.
While it may only be a short walk, this route is a relaxing adventure that will lead you uphill through the beautiful woodlands of the Kielder Forest Park to reach a spectacular display of art at the top of Cat Cairn. Created in 2000, this installation plays with the perception of light and changes over the course of the day, creating a truly unique experience that can only be found here. As such, this is a great walking route that the entire family will enjoy.
Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the northwest through the forest, following along the winding lane for 0.9 km as it climbs uphill to arrive at a junction. Passing straight through, you will continue along the road for another 1.2 km, enjoying the serene woodland setting surrounding you before arriving at the endpoint of the walk at Cat Cairn.
Here, you will discover the Kielder Forest Skyscape, an art installation created by renowned Artist James Turrell that alters the viewer’s p[erception of space and light, which is truly magical to behold. After visiting the site, you will turn back and retrace your steps down the hillside, following the winding road on the return to the car park having completed the Kielder Forest Skyscape Walk.
