Route Description for Rapid Lake Trail

Contrary to its name, the hike to Rapid Lake is not so fast. Demanding at least a half-day commitment, this lovely path travels high into Idaho’s alpine, offering incredible scenery and a wonderful workout. Note much of the terrain is rocky and uneven, so wear a sturdy pair of footwear. Additionally, this excursion lacks proper sign postage in sections, so download the trail GPS in advance. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions.

Setting out from the trailhead off Boulder Lake Road, you will take the leftmost trail that traces the northern shoreline of the Boulder Meadows Reservoir. Enjoy the scene of the beautiful pool, and the trail will eventually divert you away from the shoreline and into a swathe of woodlands. After some hiking, the path will again open, guiding you along the southern shore of Boulder Lake. At the east end of the lake, you will confront an intersection; merge onto the Kennally Creek Pack Trail here.

Beyond this point, the terrain will become increasingly rocky as you make your way up to Rapid Lake. Once at the lake, you will be granted impressive views of the surrounding granite mountainscape and the adorning lakes. Dip your tired feet in the chilly waters of Rapid Lake, then head back down to the trailhead the way you came.
