    Route Description for Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail

    Indulge in the natural beauty of the redwoods along the Lady Bird Johnson Trail. Easy-going and short, the whole family can venture this magical trail hidden high in the Redwood National Park. As a kid-friendly destination, you can expect crowds, especially on the weekends. If you are seeking a more sequestered experience, we encourage you to head out in the early morning! Located at a high elevation, this grove warrants foggier and colder conditions than lowland hikes—so dress in layers! Additionally, when exploring this scenic terrain, it is important to be mindful of the roots that obstruct the footpath.

    If you are seeking a relaxing adventure in the Redwood National Park, then the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail is an excellent option. Compared to other amazing groves in the area, this one boasts a unique and more tranquil experience. Situated over 305 m above sea level and away from the roadways, there is no noise pollution to interrupt your hike– what a bonus! Additionally, though some dislike the fog, we think it affords a more magical experience, especially when the sun pierces through the tree breaks revealing the dancing mist. Offering beautiful scenery, this route is also accessible to those with wheelchairs and strollers—enjoy!

    Setting out from the carpark off Bald Hills Road, the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail over the footbridge and into the forest. Leading you along an old logging road, the trail will begin a gentle descent through the corridor lined with lush vegetation, including huckleberry bushes and ferns. The initial segment of the hike is more monotonous, traveling amongst scrubs and the odd conifer. When you finally reach the grove’s dedication site, the scenery will improve as you are immersed amongst the famous redwoods.

    At this point, you will confront a junction, veer left here, hiking along the western edge of the ridge. Meander through the looming redwoods bounded by lush undergrowth—marvel in the beauty and grandeur of the old-growth forest and the enchanting ambiance. Keeping right at the Berry Glen Trail intersection, the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail will divert you southeastward through a collection of the grove's biggest redwoods, revealing their enormity. Continue along this route along the eastern ridge of the forest, and you will ultimately complete the circuit. From here, veer left, retracing your steps back up to the trailhead and parking lot.
