Route Description for Bridal Veil Falls via Lumpy Ridge Hike

The Bridal Veil Falls via Lumpy Ridge Hike is a wonderful extension of the Balanced Rock Trail. If you still have some gas in the tank or are seeking an overnight backpacking expedition, then this is a perfect adventure for you. Hike past the dozens of scenic overlooks and to the charming geological features along this route. Note you will be climbing to high elevations and through diverse terrain, so wear layers and check the forecast prior to your departure. Furthermore, if you are trekking in the autumn or winter, microspikes or snowshoes are highly recommended! Lastly, since this path is located within the Rocky Mountain National Park, visitors are required to purchase a park pass.

Embark on your adventure along the Bridal Veil Falls via Lumpy Ridge Trail from the Gem Lake Trailhead. From here, track north up the Gem Lake Trail. At the first intersection, keep right. Ascend the mixed meadowed and forested terrain up to the “Privy” and Gem Lake. Enjoy the charm of the lake, and continue hiking north. Eventually, the path will curve west and guide you to an intersection. Here, veer left, and you will be diverted onto the Balanced Rock Trail. Hike to the scenic overlook and revel in the sight of the balancing rock that looks as though it could tumble at any moment.

Admire the views and the granite sculpture before retracing your steps back to the intersection. From here, keep left on the Gem Lake Trail up to Cow Creek. At the next junction, maintain west along the Cow Creek Trail, passing several dispersed campsites. Hike along the curves of the creek up to Bridal Veil Falls. Enjoy the ambiance of the cascades and the mesmerizing sight of the falls. Explore the falls and take a break on one of the immense granite rocks that line the stream. When you are rested and refueled, simply retrace your steps along the path back to the trailhead, ignoring the diversion to the Balanced Rock Trail.
