Route Description for Holzwarth Historic Site Hike

Explore the grounds of the old Holzwarth Trout Lodge. The Holzwarth Historic Site Hike will guide you to the community of cabins that operated from 1920-1929. After successfully opening the Holzwarth Trout Lodge, the family built a more modern dude ranch called the Never Summer Ranch in the late 1920s and used the lodge as an overflow until its closure. Now owned and preserved by the Rocky Mountain National Park, the lodge and ranch are stimulating nature walks that outdoor enthusiasts and historical buffs alike enjoy. Located within the boundaries of the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), visitors are required to purchase a park pass.

Begin your adventure along the Holzwarth Historic Site Trail from the trailhead. From here, turn right onto the Ditch Road. Hike along the gravel path and enjoy the stunning sights of the snow-capped Never Summer Mountains on the horizon. Cross the bridge over the Colorado River and veer left at the fork in the road. Trek along the route and immerse yourself in the history of the Holzwarth Historic Site. At the next two intersections, keep left and hike around the cabins. Loop around the trail and at the next junction, veer left and loop around another homestead.

Now, you will be back on the Ditch Road, retrace your steps along the path as if you are returning to the trailhead, but instead keep right and track around the Joe Fleshhut’s Cabin. Loop around the cabin trail and you will be delivered back to the trailhead, which marks the end of your adventure.
