Spellbinding mountain views await you on the Merriam Lake Hike. This incredible adventure into the Lost River Mountains is not one you will soon forget! Explore Idaho’s alpine and discover an idyllic lake hidden in the preserved wilderness.

Route Description for Merriam Lake Hike

Mountain vistas, scenic montane meadows, alpine firs, granite gardens, and a glacial lake—what more could you ask for from a high-country hike? Unlike many ascents into Idaho’s mountains, this particular adventure is manageable for ambitious novices and families with older children. As the route is packed with elevation gain and much of the terrain is exposed, it is important to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Additionally, those hiking should be mindful of afternoon attitude storms that commonly affect the area—if you encounter a storm, please take a retreat beneath the treeline.

Embark on your journey up to Marriam Lake from the trailhead off the National Forest Development Road 118. Setting out from here, the Merriam Lake Trail travels southwestwardly, traveling through a lush meadowland before escaping beneath the canopy of spruce and alpine firs. You will also be gifted scenes of vibrant wildflowers carpeting the forest floor as you wander. Gradually climbing through the subalpine forest, the incline will intensify as you near the lake. Ascending further into the wilderness, the terrain will become increasingly exposed, unveiling astounding scenes of the Lost River Mountains.

After a steep, rocky climbing, you will crest the shoreline of Merriam Lake—a clue-hued pool hemmed by towering, craggy granite bluffs. Marvel at the majesty of the mountainous landscape and the beauty of the glacial pool. After luxuriating in the alpine waters, head back to the trailhead the way you came.
